US General Staff Chief Mark Milley urges both countries to open a period of negotiations

The United States has released one of the most accurate figures in terms of the number of casualties caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine to date. US Chief of Staff Mark Milley estimates that more than 200,000 Russian and Ukrainian soldiers were killed or wounded in the war.

“More than 100,000 Russian soldiers are dead and wounded,” Milley said in a speech to New York’s Economic Club. “The same probably on the Ukrainian side,” he added. Although this estimate has not yet been independently confirmed.

Milley added that there is still an opportunity for dialogue to end the war, and a military victory could become impossible for both Russia and Ukraine. “There has to be a mutual recognition that military victory is probably, in the truest sense of the word, unattainable by armed means, and so you have to be diverted to other options,” the senior general explained. “There is an opportunity to negotiate,” he added.

Milley’s comments came after Russia announced to its troops that they would leave the city of Kherson, in southern Ukraine. For his part, US President Joe Biden suggested that the withdrawal was proof that Moscow has “real problems” on the battlefield.
