The mayor, his deputy and the head of the local history museum of a small community of Innviertel make high-quality gifts for newborn residents of the community. They don’t do this without ulterior motives, however, as they tell the “Krone”.
The three older gentlemen are standing in a workshop in Roßbach, tinkering with various pieces of wood. At first glance they seem like a fun craft group, because the joke is busy. At the same time, however, the work is extremely professional: sawing, hammering, sanding and planing. The three craftsmen are mayor Franz Bernroithner, his deputy Engelbert Priewasser and the head of the local history museum of Roßbach, Josef Gottfried.
In her hands a beautiful wooden cradle is made, which is finally decorated with a first name and a burnt image of Roßbach’s landmark – the village fountain.
Three days of work
Why the great effort? “This will be our debut gift for the next newborn Roßbacher,” explains Bernroithner. The production of the crib, which is made entirely without screws and nails, takes three days. Vice-President Priewasser took care of the birch wood: “This wood has a beautiful color and the essential oils have a calming effect.”

In the future, all newborns from the community will receive such handmade cribs. “Each consists of four parts, which we can pre-produce together when the time is right and then store them in a space-saving manner. The cradles are eventually assembled shortly before the child is born,” says Josef Gottfried, who is also a retired master carpenter. Mayor Bernroithner hopes this campaign will give young families new impetus to move here.
Favorable construction sites
Our municipality currently has 900 inhabitants. In order to be able to continue to operate our crèche, the 2-group kindergarten with afternoon care and the 4-class primary school, we absolutely need young people to take care of the offspring. We also offer twelve building plots for a special price of only 35 euros per square meter.”
