Tragic accident Thursday afternoon in Ilz in Eastern Styria: an animal transporter overturned in a bend. It was loaded with 550 piglets, nearly 50 of which died.
On Thursday shortly before noon, a 60-year-old truck driver was driving on the B 66 from Ilz in the direction of Walkersdorf. The trailer overturned in a right turn – police are still investigating why.
Fire brigade has caught piglets
The trailer was loaded with 550 piglets. The accident caused the roof to tear open, allowing the animals to escape. They ran around on the highway carriageway. With the help of the fire brigades of Ilz and Ottendorf an der Rittschein, most of the animals were recaptured.
“Relieved From Suffering”
However, the accident killed 46 piglets. Three animals have been “released from their misery” on the orders of the official veterinarian, the police writes. The surviving animals were transferred to other vehicles. Investigators found no flaws in the van.
