Over several years – woman stole 192,000 euros in social benefits

Date:

A 47-year-old from Korneuburg in Lower Austria is said to have defrauded social benefits from the pension insurer since May 2015. The damage caused was estimated by the police on Friday at approximately 192,000 euros.

The woman is accused of giving false information about her health condition in various investigations and job applications. The Lower Austrian would have pretended to be blind and completely dependent on outside help.

Had four passports
In addition, the 47-year-old allegedly moved her life center to Tunisia and pretended to live in Austria in order to collect social benefits. The suspect used an emergency passport to hide the stays abroad, so that no stamps were visible on her document. A total of four valid passports were found during the search.

Surveys showed that the 47-year-old stayed in Austria for only 14 days in 2022 – mainly for check-up appointments. During the interrogation, the suspect admitted that she had lived mainly in Tunisia since at least 2019. As for her visual impairment, the woman said she never claimed to be blind.

According to a broadcast from the Lower Austria State Police Headquarters, it is suspected that, even though she is entitled to a disability pension, the 47-year-old has been wrongfully receiving benefits, at least in relation to the classification of the level of care . She independently wrote handwritten statements and powers of attorney.
