Turkey continues to support a peace dialogue between Russia and Ukraine, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said. “We are working on a peace corridor here, just like we did with the grain corridor,” Erdogan said, according to Turkish media. At the same time, the Turkish head of state sharply criticized the behavior of the West in this conflict.
Erdogan accused the US and other Western countries of provoking the leadership in Moscow. State broadcaster TRT and other media outlets quoted him as saying that “the West and especially the US seem to be attacking Russia endlessly”, without specifying what he meant by that. “Of course Russia is very resistant to all this.”
The grain deal expires
In July, NATO member Turkey, together with the United Nations, reached an agreement with Russia on the ship export of grain from Ukraine. Work is currently underway to extend the agreement, which would otherwise expire at the end of next week. In addition, as the host of the negotiations between the two sides in Istanbul, Turkey unsuccessfully tried to negotiate a ceasefire in the first weeks of the war.
Ukraine recently insisted that new talks would only be possible if the invaders evacuated the occupied territories. Russia said on Friday it is committed to achieving the goals of its so-called military special operation in Ukraine and that those goals can be achieved through peace talks. Kiev, however, refuses peace talks with the incumbent leadership in Moscow.
