In the first three quarters of 2022, Austrian citizenship was granted to 11,155 people. Those who were politically persecuted by the Nazi regime and their descendants have the option of naturalization without giving up their previous citizenship. From January to September 2022, 3,022 people (of which 2,992 live abroad) received Austrian citizenship under this legal title, corresponding to 27.1 percent of all naturalizations in these three quarters.
People naturalized under this title are most often nationals of the following three countries: Israel (1182 or 10.6 percent of all naturalized in the first nine months of 2022), the US (718 or 6.4 percent), and Great Britain Britain (640 or 5.7 percent). per cent). Half of the naturalizations in the first three quarters of 2022 were women (50.6 percent), about a third were minors (31.4 percent). Almost a quarter of the newly naturalized were born in Austria (2683 or 24.1 percent). Over a quarter (3,017 or 27.0 percent) of the new citizens had a place of residence abroad.
Highest growth in Vorarlberg
From January to September 2022, more people were naturalized in eight states than during the same period of the previous year. The relative increases were highest in Vorarlberg (+47.4 percent), followed by Carinthia (+46.0 percent), Vienna (+33.6 percent) and Styria (+31.0 percent). In Burgenland (-7.6 percent) there were fewer naturalizations than last year.
