The Union DE A has called five new strike days in the Biscay residences in defense of publication and improvement of working conditions. They denounce that both “the employers’ associations of the GESCA, LARES and ELBE sectors” and “the Provincial Council of Bizkaia” continue to bet on a model “that puts business before people”. They have offered a piece of information: “while the employers have received 255 million in government money, the workers are accumulating a loss of purchasing power of 16.5%.”
In this sense, the central abertzale assures that employers continue to put forward proposals such as “the salary freeze, the refusal to replace employees from day one and the improvement of attention that guarantees more staff”. It also adds that the Provincial Council of Bizkaia “continues its social propaganda, omits the social reality demanded by the sector and distributes an additional 255 million euros to companies in the sector to increase their profits”.
Since nursing homes are a feminized sector, according to ELA, “women have to show a thousand times that they are capable of fighting for better care and working conditions”. “The work of these workers is not appreciated, and they are treated that way by employers, the Provincial Council of Bizkaia and the Basque government,” the union emphasizes.
With this scenario, the employees of the residences consider it necessary to mobilize to “demand that the companies in the sector take a step forward once and for all in improving working conditions and the quality of services”.
