The UN General Assembly on Monday passed a resolution that could later serve as the basis for Russia’s reparations to Ukraine.
94 countries voted in favor of the resolution in New York on Monday, gaining the necessary two-thirds majority. 73 countries abstained, 14 voted against – in addition to Russia, including China, Iran and Cuba. The text calls on Ukraine, among other things, to record information about war damage in a kind of register. It is said that Russia must bear the consequences of its illegal actions. The resolution, however, is nothing more than a political signal to Moscow. It is not binding.
US sanctions companies in Armenia, Taiwan and Switzerland
Meanwhile, the US is now also targeting suspected supporters of Russia. Sanctions have been imposed on a number of companies. The companies are accused of helping Moscow buy weapons and thereby supporting the war. Specifically, it concerns a Russian company specializing in the manufacture and production of microelectronics and three companies related to the company – in Armenia, Taiwan and Switzerland.
Further sanctions targeted “a global network” linked to two Russian businessmen close to the Kremlin who manage their assets, or at least parts of them, in the West, the US Treasury Department said Monday. In total, the United States has imposed sanctions on 14 people and 28 entities, including two Swiss nationals and several companies in Switzerland and France. As a result of the sanctions, all US assets of those affected will be frozen. U.S. citizens are prohibited from doing business with them. Doing business internationally is also usually made much more difficult for those affected by the sanctions.
