Rescue chain on the mountain – when 300,000 skiers storm the Tyrolean slopes

Date:

From on-site emergency services and first aid to ground services, helicopter transport and hospitals: “The rescue chain in the Tyrolean glacier ski areas” was the subject of the medal symposium in “Greenvieh” in Mieming.

“We are talking about a complex system in which every part must work together optimally,” said Medalp founder Alois Schranz in his opening statement to the 100 guests, including TirolKliniken boss Stefan Deflorian and those responsible for the five Tyrolean glacier ski areas of the Zillertal, Kaunertal, Pitztal, Stubaital and Ötztal.

As part of the symposium, representatives of the mountain railways of Sölden, the Red Cross of Imst and trauma surgeon Fabian Gerber (medal) reported on medical practice on the glaciers.

Promote exchange between participants
“With this format, we want to promote exchanges between all those involved – in this form it is a real first. Because good communication is not only extremely important on the mountain, but also in the further development of the entire supply system,” explains Schranz .

In an emergency, in addition to a quick readiness for action, the exact documentation is also decisive, which is an absolute must with 300,000 people on the slopes of Tyrol at the same time every day.

1200 rescue missions in the Sölden ski area
“The most important thing is quick decisions and clear processes – after all, we are talking about more than 1,200 operations in our ski area last year alone,” reports Sölden’s piste rescuer Fabian Fürruter.

The rescue chain works well
The next phase – the transport from the mountain to the valley – then takes place by ambulance or helicopter, depending on the severity of the injury. Stefan Egger of the Red Cross Imst emphasizes that the conditions on the ground are perfect in Sölden. “There are fixed transfer points and at these points we have the possibility to drive the rescue vehicle directly to the ski area,” says Egger.

Although this is not possible everywhere due to conditions, the rescue chain works well in all glacier ski areas.
