According to a media report, German investigators are pursuing leads to Poland as they investigate the explosions at the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea.
There are indications that a suspected sabotage team may have used Poland as an operating base, the Wall Street Journal said Saturday. It relies on the evaluation of data from the sailing yacht “Andromeda”, which is suspected to have been used to sabotage the pipelines.
Two week voyage of the reconstructed yacht
Investigators completely reconstructed the ship’s two-week journey using data from its radio and navigation equipment, satellite and cell phones, and email accounts. They found that the yacht had deviated from its course to enter Polish waters. In addition, the investigators had tried to “assign at least one Ukrainian soldier” to DNA samples on board. The Federal Criminal Investigation Service and the Polish Prime Minister’s Office initially did not respond to questions from Reuters.
The Washington Post reported a few days ago that three months before the attack on the Nord Stream pipelines, the United States learned of Ukrainian plans to attack the gas pipelines. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy subsequently denied his country’s involvement in the attack. Russia had been pumping natural gas from Siberia to Germany and other European countries through Nord Stream 1 until the supply freeze. Nord Stream 2 was not commissioned due to the Russian attack on Ukraine. The two double tubes were severely damaged by explosions in September 2022.
According to the Wall Street Journal, investigators concluded that the explosive used was HMX, also known as octogen, which is capable of destroying underwater infrastructure.
Polish company owned by Ukraine
The yacht’s crew set sail for Poland after the alleged installation of explosives on Nord Stream 1, the newspaper reported, citing people familiar with the “Andromeda’s” route. Then the ship, which had been leased from a German company a few days earlier, sailed back north to also connect explosives to Nord Stream 2, according to the researchers.
As early as March, the media reported that the suspicious yacht belonged to a Ukrainian company from Poland. The explosions on the pipelines occurred in the economic zones of Sweden and Denmark.
