Outrage at the Roman-era Flavia Solva site in Wagna, southern Styria: Brave robbers are said to have used metal detectors to dig up ancient coins from the ground. Why archaeologists are so shocked – and why usually only Klumpert is offered on the Internet.
“The advantage of the most interesting discoveries often lies in a few, and often even in a single coin,” the Joanneum annual report stated as early as 1818. “This applies in particular to Flavia Solva, because each and every one of them is an important testimony that enables us to better understand the history of the first capital of Styria,” says Karl Peitler, head of the coin cabinet at the Joanneum Universal Museum, which is located in Eggenberg Castle.
