The passengers and crew of a Cathay Pacific plane experienced anxious minutes on Monday shortly after takeoff from Boston: the cabin of the Airbus A350 suddenly filled with smoke – the plane had to turn around and make an emergency landing.
The plane, which had taken off from Boston Logan International Airport in Massachusetts, was only 30 minutes into its journey to Hong Kong when thick smoke began filling the cockpit and cabin shortly after midnight (see video above).
The Airbus, which had reached an altitude of 1.5 kilometers at the time, returned to Boston, flew a holding pattern to dump fuel and made an emergency landing at 3:31 a.m. local time. No injuries were reported and the cause of the smoke was under investigation, US authorities said.
Hong Kong airline Cathay Pacific said the “precautionary return flight” was operated “in accordance with standard procedures”. “Every decision we make is about safety. We sincerely apologize to affected customers for the inconvenience,” the airline said in a statement
The passengers were transferred to a later long-haul flight to return to the former British crown colony, which was acquired by Queen Victoria in 1842 but has reverted to authoritarianism since returning to China.
