At the top of the Zugspitze on the German side, a climber fell and died on Friday afternoon. An eyewitness testified that the previously unknown man was hit and carried away by snow masses just below the summit at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, police said on Saturday.
The accident happened around 2 p.m. not far from the border with Tyrol. According to the police, the man fell about 400 meters deep. The rescuers who were called could only determine the man’s death. Eleven other climbers who were in the same spot and noticed the accident had to be rescued by helicopters.
Caught in a snow slide
According to an eyewitness, the man, whose identity has not yet been clarified, was alone on the Höllental via ferrata. He was caught by a snow slide and eventually fell down. In the Höllentalferner area, the alpinist ultimately remained mortally wounded.
The investigation into the circumstances of the accident and the identity of the deceased is still ongoing. Debts to third parties are currently not taken over.
“Due to the still wintry conditions in the mountain areas, such snowslides are not uncommon. More exits are to be expected in the coming days and weeks,” the German police warned.
