The Slovenian government is considering reintroducing border controls with Croatia. She fears that refugees could get stuck in Slovenia, especially because of Austrian border controls.
Due to the increasing number of refugees, several EU countries have reintroduced internal controls. The youngest EU country Croatia should also be part of the Schengen area on 1 January 2023. “Now (…) we don’t want Slovenia to become a dead end because of an increase in migrants and refugees,” Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon said on Monday. Slovenia is ready to introduce internal controls “next day, next week or next month as and when required”.
Fewer internal border controls
Clear rules are needed for the Schengen area, but fewer internal border controls if that is not really necessary, the minister said after the meeting of EU foreign ministers. The reform, which has been in the works for years, must finally be implemented.
The Slovenian government has complained about Austrian border controls for years, accusing the government of failing to prove a new security threat.
