Armenia’s only nuclear power plant was temporarily shut down by a lightning strike, but operations resumed on Saturday, Russian news agency Interfax reported, citing local authorities.
The Mezamor nuclear power plant was struck by lightning on Friday evening, prompting the plant’s automatic safety system to shut down the reactor, the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure said after the Interfax report.
As a result, there was a power outage in several districts of the capital Yerevan and some other regions of the country, it is said.
The Mezamor nuclear power plant is the only nuclear power plant in Armenia and the entire Caucasus. It is named after the nearby town of Mezamor (about 30 kilometers west of Yerevan; note) and the river of the same name from which it draws its cooling water.
