British police are investigating a suspected racist arson attack in the southern English port city of Dover. A man threw two to three firebombs into rooms of the Home Office for Migrants, Kent County Police said Sunday. One person was injured. According to local media, the rooms are a detention center for refugees who come illegally across the Channel to Britain.
The suspected perpetrator has been identified, according to police. Authorities initially declined to respond to media reports that the man subsequently committed suicide. In Dover there are always protests against migration.
Controversial Rwanda Deportations
More than 38,000 people have already crossed the Channel illegally this year, significantly more than in all of 2021. This is a thorn in the side of the Conservative government in London. It tries to deter migrants with radical measures.
The government wants to fly all people who illegally enter the country to East African Rwanda, where they can apply for asylum. A return to Great Britain is out of the question.
