Numerous videos are circulating on social media of mysterious grazing lights that have crossed the Indian sky. While some say it may have been a UFO that flew by, there is a terrestrial explanation: According to astronomer Jonathan McDowell, it was most likely the glowing third stage of a Chinese Long March 3B rocket.
Many people in India saw bright streaks of light in the sky on Saturday night and in many cases also took pictures. Indian media reported on Sunday that such photos and videos have been published on social networks, particularly in the states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.
As the astronomer McDowell of the Center for Astrophysics at Harvard explained on his Twitter account, it is likely a rocket launched in February 2021. There were initially no reports of a possible impact from the missile’s remains.
Crash with debris rain?
As early as May 2020, after the maiden flight of a Chinese Long March 5B missile, debris fell in the West African Côte d’Ivoire, damaging several houses in villages. The following year, another burnt-out staircase from one of these missiles fell to the ground, raising concerns about a shower of debris. The remains eventually fell into the Indian Ocean.
In India, an eyewitness told local news agency ANI that the phenomenon was seen for about two minutes on Saturday, while another described several individual tracers side by side.
