Large parts of Moldova, which borders Ukraine, were hit by a massive power outage early Tuesday evening. According to Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Spinu, hundreds of thousands of residents of at least ten of the country’s oblasts, including the capital Chisinau, have been affected by the blackout.
The reason for this would be Russian air strikes in neighboring Ukraine. Spinu spoke of a “wide blackout”. According to the first information, the electricity grid in Moldova is intact, but was shut down due to accidents in Ukraine. The grid operator Moldoelectrica says that “all power supply from Romania is currently completely lost”.
The country has been getting between 80 and 90 percent of its electricity needs from the neighboring country for a few weeks after pro-Russian authorities in the breakaway region of Transnistria cut electricity supplies from the Ciugurdan power plant to Moldova to 23 percent in October.
Airstrikes on several Ukrainian cities
According to information from Kiev, Russia has carried out airstrikes on several Ukrainian cities. Sirens sounded across the country in the afternoon, followed by explosions in Kiev, Lviv and Kharkiv, according to an anti-aircraft app. After the attacks, power went out in several regions of Ukraine.
