At least 29 people have died in a boating accident in the West African country of Nigeria. Among the victims are five children; many people are still missing, city councilor Aliyu Dantani of the German news agency said on Wednesday.
The boat capsized Tuesday on the Shagari River in northwestern Sokoto state. The exact number of passengers is unclear, Dantani said. Rescuers were still at work on Wednesday.
Boat overload notifications
Accidents like this happen again and again in Nigeria and other African countries because boats are often fully overloaded and in poor condition. This is also a case of overloading with freight and passengers.
