More than 700 sick teachers – emergency operation in schools: ‘No one is sent home’

Date:

The new school year starts in Carinthia with enormous staffing problems. Every tenth educator is currently on sick leave, which is why educational institutions now had to switch to emergency operation.

The Corona wave is raging through the schools of Carinthia. “The large number of sick days is a major challenge, especially in small and very small schools in rural areas,” says education director Isabella Penz. The approximately 730 missing teachers are either in bed themselves infected with the coronavirus, suffering from other flu infections or caring for their infected children on breastfeeding leave. In addition, other traffic restrictions apply to teachers in the compulsory education area in the event of a Covid 19 infection: “No infected teachers are allowed to work at these school levels!”

“Due to these circumstances, several schools have been in emergency mode since Tuesday,” Penz said. Classes had to be merged and non-specialist teachers had to add supplier hours. In more critical cases, even non-teachers must supervise the students to fulfill the duty of supervision. “No one is sent home,” says the director of education.

Easing the situation in sight?
What is the further timetable? The education department expects the situation to calm down soon. “The corona wave is raging. I assume that the situation will ease soon,” Penz said confidently.
