Biden considers it “unlikely” that “given the trajectory, the missile was fired from Russia”

Gathered at the G-20 summit in Bali, members of the G-7 and some NATO countries, such as Spain, investigate the deadly explosion that left two dead in Poland

After several hours in which it seemed that World War III could break out due to last night’s explosion in Poland, near the border with Ukraine, peace has returned to the G-20 summit that concludes in Indonesia this Wednesday. Tense calm, yes, because of the two deaths from that explosion, which is already under investigation to determine whether or not it was caused by one of the Russian missiles that fell on western Ukraine yesterday. If it were deliberate, Poland could invoke NATO Articles 4 and 5 to ask its allies for help, which could mark a dangerous turn in the conflict.

While it was initially thought that it could be one of those projectiles that went off course, it’s not entirely clear and there are some hypotheses that point in a completely different direction. This was announced by the President of the United States, Joe Biden, on Wednesday after a meeting with the leaders of the G-7 and some NATO countries that were present at the Bali summit, such as Spain.

“There is preliminary information that disproves that,” Biden replied when asked by a group of American journalists whether the missile had been launched from Russia. “I don’t want to say until we’ve fully investigated it, but given the trajectory of the missile, it’s unlikely it was fired from Russia. We’ll see, we’ll see…,” Biden said with some hesitation in a video broadcast on MSNBC.

He was more emphatic about the investigation into the causes because, as he noted, “there is total unanimity and we’re going to make sure we find out exactly what happened.” He was equally forceful when it came to condemning the Russian missile strikes, which “continue the brutality and inhumanity they have shown in this war against Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure”. According to him, “what they are doing is totally unthinkable” because “when the world meets in the G-20 to demand a de-escalation, Russia is continuing its escalation in Ukraine. What are they after? There are dozens and dozens of rocket attacks in Western Ukraine. We fully support Ukraine at this point and will do everything we can to give them the opportunity to stand up for themselves.”

For his part, the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, appeared before the national press at the G-20. After the meeting of the G7 and the NATO countries, which was also attended by Ursula van der Leyen and Charles Michel as representatives of the European Union, Albares “emphasized the need to support the research with all possible means so that it could it be clarified what exactly this explosion that occurred in Poland is and under what circumstances it took place.

In addition to expressing his “solidarity with Poland and with the relatives of the victims of that explosion”, he explained that “this indiscriminate and massive wave of rockets that fell on Ukraine, leaving a very high percentage of cities without electricity, is unanimously rejected.” ». This new Russian offensive coincided with the end of the first day of the G-20 summit in Bali, where agreement was reached on a highly critical statement of the invasion launched by Putin that his foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, had to swallow . After the gathering’s gala dinner, which he attended in the traditional Indonesian shirt, he left Bali in the middle of the night. Soon after, rockets rained down on Ukraine. Regardless of where the projectile that caused the deadly explosion in Poland came from, the most important thing for Albares is that “unity is needed more than ever and we reaffirm that all possible efforts are needed to bring peace back to Ukraine.”

After a tense few hours in which it seemed as if World War III could break out, peace returned to the peaceful island of Bali and the G-20 leaders followed their agenda by planting mangroves in an environmental conservation project.
