Ship belongs to Israel – Oil tanker attacked by drone in Gulf of Oman

Date:

An oil tanker was attacked by a drone off the coast of Oman. It had exploded, the AP news agency reported on Wednesday, citing a senior military officer. The U.S. Fifth Fleet is monitoring the incident, Commander Timothy Hawkins told Reuters.

According to the AP report, the tanker attacked was the Pacific Zirkon, a Liberian-flagged vessel owned by Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping. This ultimately belongs to Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer.

The crew was not injured in the attack
A statement from the shipping company said the Pacific Zircon, which carries gas oil, was “hit by a projectile” about 150 miles off the coast of Oman. “We are in contact with the ship, there are no reports of injuries. All crew members are safe,” the company said. There was some minor damage to the hull, but no water entered the tanker, it said.

It is still unclear who is responsible for the attack, the details of which are not yet known. The Gulf of Oman connects to the Persian Gulf. The major shipping lanes for the world’s oil supply pass through these seas.
