Two Syrian refugees took a BFI German course together in Vienna. But because one of the two was particularly skilled and ambitious there, the other almost stabbed him to death. Now the jury must decide.
Two young men had to flee their homeland, hoping for a life of freedom in Austria. But because one of the two did better in the German course at the BFI, the other stabbed him several times in the neck. And within seconds the dreams were destroyed.
Sounds absurd and scary, but that’s exactly what happened on July 12, 2022 in Vienna. That is why on Wednesday, two days after ex-Greens Christoph Chorherr, a young Syrian took his place in the grand courtroom of the Vienna regional court – charged with attempted murder.
“Nerd” described perpetrators as “lazy”
“The victim was particularly ambitious in the German course and progressed quickly,” the prosecutor told the jury, “so the suspect called his classmate a ‘nerd’, who in turn called the later perpetrator ‘lazy’.” there was an argument and a scrambling. Later, the 22-year-old stabbed him three times, punching his hardworking classmate in the carotid artery and seriously injuring him.
“Why did you have a jackknife with you during the German course?” Judge Christina Salzborn asked the man with the medium length black hair through an Arabic interpreter: “I bought it a week earlier. Sometimes I cut my apple with it.”
“Let’s Fix This Between Men”
He is factual about the incident. “However,” explains attorney Andreas Reichenbach, “the victim repeatedly teased and provoked my client. He also told them to meet to sort things out between men.
The perpetrator replied as follows: “After class, Odai followed me and wanted to hit me. So I took the knife out of my pocket. I hoped he’d take it as a threat and run.’ When he did not run away, however, he lost his courage and continued aimlessly.
pending statement
The victim describes what happened, also through an interpreter, differently. “Yes, there was an altercation that day. But later the defendant walked far ahead of me, about 300 meters – then he turned and ran towards me with the knife in his hand.” adjourned.
