US general on Ukraine: – “Military victory not very likely”

Date:

The top US general, Mark Milley, warns of exaggerated hopes of a short-term military victory for Ukraine. Despite the setbacks, Russia still has significant combat capability in Ukraine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said at a news conference on Wednesday.

“Militarily, the chances of a Ukrainian military victory – defined as driving the Russians out of all of Ukraine, including Crimea they claim – are not very high.” But there could be a political solution. “It’s possible,” Milley said. Russia is “on its back at the moment”.

Kiev sees no advance from Russia
According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia has not put any pressure on peace talks with his government. “They don’t communicate with us,” he told reporters on Wednesday.

During a virtual meeting of the Ukrainian contact group, many states pledged further support to the country attacked by Russia. According to the US, the talks centered on efforts to strengthen missile defenses, protect Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and train Ukraine’s armed forces.

“All these initiatives help the Ukrainians to consolidate their gains over the winter and take new initiatives in the spring,” US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said in Washington on Wednesday. Arms deliveries to Ukraine are coordinated through the Contact Group Ukraine.

The Czech Republic wants to train up to 4,000 Ukrainian soldiers
The Czech Republic has decided on a training program for up to 4,000 members of the Ukrainian armed forces. The cabinet of liberal-conservative Prime Minister Petr Fiala gave the go-ahead on Wednesday. Accordingly, five four-week training cycles are planned on the territory of EU and NATO member states, each of which will allow up to 800 military personnel from Ukraine attacked by Russia to participate.
