Reader photo alarmed – watch out for plastic wrap in cans of dog food!

Date:

Dog owners know – when the animal is hungry, it often has to go fast. But the rush could prove fatal to the beloved four-legged friend, as production-related contamination seems inevitable. We explain why pet owners should be extra careful with canned food.

“Krone” reader Magdalena D. couldn’t believe her eyes when she wanted to prepare dinner for her dog. After opening the can, a large strip of cling film emerged, which would certainly have caused damage to the health of the hungry four-legged friend. After the initial shock, the concerned dog lover contacted the manufacturer and also informed the animal corner “Krone”.

Advice pending
The manufacturer contacted by Ms. D. responded immediately and asked for the batch number and to send the foreign body for further examination. However, in response to a request from “Krone”, there was still no official statement about a possible recall of the product. But how can such foreign objects get into the cans in the first place?

control is better
After investigating the industry, an insider revealed: “The meat for industrial production is usually frozen and wrapped in foil, often a small part that has stuck to the meat is overlooked when cutting away. The machines can extract metal and glass filter, but the control mechanism does not work on the plastic packaging.” This means that pet owners should probably rely on their own responsibility and exercise great care when preparing food cans.

Customer service is a top priority
Animal specialty store “Fressnapf Austria”, spokesperson for the group, Jürgen Seiwaldstätter, is also aware of the problem. “Unfortunately, it happens time and time again that customers complain about food cans for these reasons. In these cases, we will of course exchange the products after presentation of the invoice.”
