In France, unemployment benefits will be paid for different periods from 2023, depending on the economic situation. When the economy is doing well, the entitlement period should be shorter than in bad times, when it is harder to find a job and unemployment is higher.
This was decided by the Senate on Thursday in Paris. However, the rules have not yet been laid down in detail in law. Further coordination with the social partners should take place soon. Unemployment benefits in France can currently be taken for two to three years.
Unemployment rate 7.4 percent
Unemployment is currently falling, most recently it was 7.4 percent. If it is up to President Emmanuel Macron, that should be a maximum of five percent in 2027. That would be consistent with his goal of full employment. The change is intended to help companies hire more staff.
Macron has not had an absolute majority in parliament since the summer and was able to implement the reform together with the conservative Républicains. The left-wing camp and the right-wing national Rassemblement National opposed the project.
