Not only are there fewer farms in Carinthia, the number of dairy cows has also fallen considerably in recent decades. At the same time, the amount of milk produced continued to rise (see graph). The “Krone” elaborated on the reasons for this development.
Shortly after World War II, there were 86,245 dairy cows in Carinthia. In 2021 there were only 34,735. “Agriculture has changed in recent decades. A lot has also happened in the dairy industry,” explains Wolfgang Stromberger of the Carinthian Chamber of Agriculture. A cow used to give about eight liters of milk a day, nowadays there are fifty.
