The city of Vienna has a “trans*zebra crossing” again: since Friday there is a colorful pedestrian crossing at the beginning of the Burggasse from the Volkstheater to the Museumsquartier in Vienna-Neubau. “Put a colorful sign against discrimination in a central and particularly busy place in the city,” said district leader Markus Reiter (Greens) at the opening.
Reiter stressed that transgender, intersex and non-binary people still face huge disadvantages and exclusion in professional and everyday life. Globally, hostility towards the group is even on the rise. “All people have the right to live equally, safely and freely,” said the district leader.
Neubau is considered a human rights district
Viennese Human Rights Commissioner Shams Asadi pointed out that trans* people are still exposed to discrimination and intolerance in everyday life and in public: “The fact that Neubau as a human rights neighborhood with trans* crossings has expressed its position on ‘equal rights for all’ communicates is an important signal,’ she underlined.
Important milestone
Volkstheater director Kay Voges also applauded the colorful protection path in front of his house: “We see it as an important milestone that the first new construction ‘Trans*zebra crossing’ is a visible sign against discrimination. The zebra crossing leads directly from the Museum Quarter to the Volkstheater – a place that speaks out against any form of discrimination. We are very pleased that this attitude is now also reflected in the public space.”
