The asylum crisis in Europe is reaching a peak: there is not enough shelter for refugees in the Belgian capital Brussels. Tents were set up in the middle of the city center. A solution is not in sight. Refugee tents have been causing a stir in Austria for weeks.
Sint-Katelijneplein with its church, the many pubs and the fish market is one of the most casual and pleasant places that Brussels has to offer. On the one hand it is only a few steps to the famous Grand Place, on the other hand it is also only a few steps to the large asylum seekers center.
Homemade plastic crates
And there, standing on the bridge over the canal – tents. Small homemade plastic crates, poorly covered with tarpaulins, lined only with a thin bottom.
Asylum seekers sleep on the street
The asylum crisis in Brussels has been escalating for some time now. People are indeed entitled to housing as part of their asylum process, but there is a shortage of places. A few weeks ago, the Brussels homeless association set up a kind of cardboard tent for the migrants, which the mayor had removed. But asylum seekers are still sleeping on the streets.
Top without result
Fedasil, the agency for the reception of asylum seekers, has already been convicted about 1,000 times since the beginning of this year. So far, this has not changed the intolerable situation for those affected. As in Austria, a summit of federal ministers recently ended without result. It was stressed that Belgium needed larger reception centers for refugees. However, there are no plans on where and how such camps will be built.
