It’s official: train travelers have become noticeably more forgetful when it comes to their belongings. In the outgoing year 2022, they left 27,000 objects on trains of the Austrian Federal Railways. In 2021 there were much fewer – rarities, including those of an animal nature, were of course also present this year.
It is a drastic increase of 42 percent from 2021, when 19,000 finds were recorded, according to the ÖBB assessment published on Friday.
- The classic and undefeated number 1 among forgotten things goes to bags, backpacks and the like. A total of 8900 were delivered.
- Electrical items follow in second place, about 4,900 times they were left on trains.
- Wallets, papers or money were handed in 3400 times.
The strangest finds
But of course there were also surprises in the lost and found this year. The strangest are probably two dogs left alone on the trains. But two wheelchairs also remained on the train, as did hearing aids, braces, dentures, walkers, crutches and walking sticks. And some musicians were also forgetful this year: 81 instruments were found on trains – mostly guitars.
In total, an average of 70 items were submitted per day. All those finds that are no longer collected by the owners are handed over to the government by the ÖBB, as required by law.
