Colds and co – autumn viruses: 250,000 Austrians on sick leave

Date:

Many people currently have to stay home because of colds, summer flu and the like. Covid-19 currently accounts for less than every tenth case.

As is known, there are many viruses in circulation in the fall – also this year. The Medical University of Vienna is constantly receiving samples from people from all over Austria suffering from respiratory diseases.

cold and summer flu
The triggers are varied. “We currently have a lot of rhinovirus infections, this is a normal cold as we have known it for centuries,” explains virologist Monika Redlberger-Fritz from MedUni Vienna to Ö1. There are still cases of summer flu caused by enteroviruses.

According to the ÖGK, about 250,000 Austrians are currently on sick leave. CoV infections account for less than a tenth of cases. 4110 new infections were registered in Austria on Thursday. The daily number of infections has therefore increased slightly again. The number of hospitals, on the other hand, fell, at least on the normal wards. In intensive care, the situation should remain virtually unchanged.

More flu cases expected
So far, 205 cases of flu have been reported. In recent years there have been no flu outbreaks due to face masks and the like. However, more cases are expected again this year, according to Redlberger-Fritz. Experts recommend vaccination for people over the age of 60, people with chronic diseases (eg of the kidneys, metabolic diseases), people on immunosuppressive therapy and pregnant women, among others.

According to Redlberger-Fritz, the flu vaccination is particularly important this year and should be administered in the fall. Those who are vaccinated usually get milder and shorter sick, get complications less often or have to go to the hospital.
