If a battery overheats, it can quickly reach temperatures of up to 1000 degrees Celsius. Such a defect almost became fatal for an e-scooter driver from the Baden district.
An e-scooter driver from Tribuswinkel in the Baden district had to learn painfully on Thursday how dangerous a defective battery can be in the truest sense of the word. The man was driving the electric vehicle when he suddenly noticed a sharp drop in performance.
Moments later, flames shot out of the running board where the battery is installed. A firefighter who happened to pass by in the company car was able to prevent the fire from spreading with a hand extinguisher, after which his alarmed comrades took over.
Metal case completely ripped open
The energy created during the fire was clearly visible when looking at the scooter: the metal housing was completely torn open. “When a lithium-ion battery overheats, it causes a thermal reaction inside that heats up the battery in a very short time. It can get up to 1000 degrees hot. It inflates and starts to burn,” explains operations manager Philipp Braun. of course particularly dangerous if such a defect occurs in closed rooms, especially since toxic fumes are also produced in addition to the heat.
battery cooled
The main focus of the Florianis was therefore also battery cooling. To prevent it from igniting again, it was placed in a vessel filled with water for a long time.
