Two dead buzzards have been found in the Lower Austrian district of Hollabrunn. Observers also discovered several birds with typical gunshot marks in their plumage.
A sinister sniper who clearly preys on birds of prey, some of which are heavily protected, is roaming the Hollabrunn precinct. A shot marsh harrier was found near Guntersdorf and brought to the bird of prey shelter in the Haringsee.
Birds with holes in the plumage
Animal protection experts BirdLife therefore lay in wait in the area – and were able to spot four marsh harriers, four buzzards and a Montagu’s harrier with striking plumage openings within a short time. “Such so-called gunshot marks are mainly caused by gunfire,” explains Johannes Hohenegger of BirdLife.
The police are searching feverishly
The police also launched a search with the BirdLife dog unit, where two dead buzzards were found. A shot has already been found in the body of one of the birds, but the findings are still pending on the second. The police are feverishly looking for the illegal shooter.
