Carinthian doctor becomes ESA astronaut

Date:

Austria has its first female astronaut in Carmen Possnig. The Carinthian doctor will now be part of the European ESA astronaut corps.

From a total of 22,500 applicants from all over Europe, the young Carinthian managed to assert himself in a complicated selection process. This means that the resident of Klagenfurt will be part of the ESA Astronaut Corps. Five years ago, Possnig was sent to the North Pole for a year on behalf of ESA (European Space Agency). There, the GP examined the effects of isolation and low oxygen levels on the crew of the Arctic Station Concordia.

First an Austrian in space
With her acceptance as a reserve astronaut in the astronaut corps, Possnig has the chance to be the first Austrian to fly into space. Before her, Franz Viehböck was the only Austrian to complete an all-stay in 1991 as part of the “Austromir” mission.
