Fit for the office? – Biden combative: “I’m not going anywhere”

Date:

US President Joe Biden confirmed during the national holiday celebrations that he would not drop out of the race for the White House. “I’m not going anywhere,” Biden said, relying on his strength at a barbecue for active military personnel in the White House garden.

He said this after a short speech that was read from the teleprompter. Biden then spontaneously addressed the guests – this sentence was also mentioned.

Meanwhile, his Republican challenger Donald Trump asked the 81-year-old to take part in another televised duel. “Let’s have another debate, but this time without taboos – a discussion where the two of us stand on stage and talk about the future of our country,” he wrote on his Truth Social mouthpiece.

After his TV debacle against Trump, Biden is fighting on all fronts to save his presidential candidacy. A week ago, he had a disastrous performance on the evening television duel, made multiple promises and lost the thread. After the performance, a debate broke out in the US about whether Biden is really the right Democratic candidate for the presidential elections in November.

Gets tangled again
He wants to give a TV interview on Friday to dispel doubts about his suitability. The broadcast is scheduled for prime time (Saturday 02:00 CEST). During the interview, he will have to speak freely. During his appointments on the national holiday, Biden, as in almost all of his appearances, read largely from the teleprompter, but here too he repeatedly got confused.

In the US, every appearance by the oldest president in the country’s history is now watched like a hawk. His actual speech on the national holiday was very short in the evening. US Vice President Kamala Harris praised Biden effusively, calling him “an extraordinary president”. The American national holiday on July 4, which dates back to the Declaration of Independence in 1776, is traditionally celebrated with parties, parades and fireworks.

Biden received soldiers in the afternoon in the garden of the government headquarters in the US capital Washington. After a short speech, he apparently spontaneously turned to his guests again and assured them that he did not want to go “anywhere”. A supporter had earlier shouted: “Keep fighting! We need them!”

Is Biden fit for office?
Biden’s health and the question of whether he is still fit for office have been a recurring topic in recent months. Now new reports about his physical condition are causing a stir. According to media reports, Biden said in a conversation with governors that he had to sleep more and work less. This also means that he has to limit his attendance at events after 8 p.m. At the same time, he made it clear that he wanted to remain in the race for the White House.

CNN reported that Biden’s remarks frustrated some governors. American media previously wrote that Biden is often not particularly fit in the evenings and that with such appointments the chance of slips of the tongue is particularly high. The TV debate with Trump a week ago also took place in the evening.

Trump takes advantage of his opponent’s weakness

Trump is using his opponent’s current weakness for his own purposes. The otherwise rather vocal Republican has been conspicuously reserved in recent days. Now the 78-year-old wrote that Biden’s lack of competence would become apparent in another debate.

A second televised duel is planned anyway – in September, after the Democratic Party convention in Chicago in August. Biden was actually supposed to be officially named presidential candidate there. He collected the necessary delegate votes for this in the primaries. It is now unclear whether he can continue to withstand the pressure within his own party – or whether he will throw in the towel.
