After another company was commissioned to mow the Danube Island in Vienna, the “WUK.bioschafe” project was on the verge of collapse. Finally a happy ending came for the Krainer Steinschafe.
About 80 sheep from the Werkstätten- und Kulturhaus (WUK) were used from 2019 to 2021 as environmentally friendly lawnmowers on the grounds of the Danube Island. Until recently, the club was still feverishly looking for a new home for the Krainer Steinschafe. The reason for this was the rescheduling of the mowing order for the Danube Island this spring.
Sheep sponsorship and donation
“Since the spring, when it was announced that the WUK would no longer be commissioned to graze the Danube Island, we have done everything we can to keep the leading socio-ecological project WUK bio.schafe going. We have the Not only did we receive a lot of encouragement in recent months, we were able to win many new friends who were willing to support the project financially with a sheep sponsorship or a donation,” says Susanne Senekowitsch of the organic sheep association WUK.
Although many people helped to find new grazing grounds, the association now had to accept “that a responsible continuation of the project under free market conditions and without appropriate public procurement is not possible”.
30 sheep remain in the Marchfeld
A request for help was also made on Facebook. “The response to our call and the willingness to help was overwhelming,” says Susanne Senekowitsch of the organic sheep association WUK.
30 sheep are housed at the club’s Lassee site in Marchfeld and are still used for grazing near-natural pastures. The other animals are distributed in Burgenland and South Styria, among others.
