High number of unreported cases – More than 50,000 migrants have died since 2014

Date:

Since 2014, the United Nations Agency for Migration (IOM) has documented more than 50,000 deaths on migration routes around the world. Migration researchers assume that there is an additional number of unreported cases because not all cases are registered.

According to the IOM, governments in the countries of origin, transit and destination are doing too little to bring migration under control. 2014 is the year in which systematic registration started.

According to statistics, more than half of the people on the migration routes across the Mediterranean to Europe died. More than 60 percent of the 50,000 have never been identified.

Of those missing who could be identified, about 9,000 were from Africa, 6,500 from Asia, and about 3,000 from South and Central America. Among the identified dead, the largest group came from Afghanistan (1795), followed by Myanmar (1467) and Syria (1118).
