Several motorists expressed their anger at an accident-related roadblock in Völs in the Tyrolean district of Innsbruck-Land on Monday to the fire service, who closed the road after the accident. The angry drivers behaved so wildly that the police intervened. It put several advertisements.
It is normal for the fire service to clean up after a traffic accident, block the road for the duration of the work and direct traffic. Unfortunately, she also has to deal with aggressive drivers again and again. “When the barriers are closed, someone is almost always scolding. But this time it was remarkably frequent and massive,” said Herbert Strickner, commander of the Völs volunteer fire brigade, about the recent operation.
At about 3:30 p.m., a truck and a car collided on Götzner Landesstraße in Völs, injuring the driver of the car. The road was completely closed for about four hours. The fire service directed traffic at an intersection below the accident site while other comrades cleared the area.
Comrade asked for police support over the radio
“Then a colleague radioed that the police had been sent to him,” recalls Herbert Strickner. Motorists got out, insulted the firefighters, discussed with them, “even the middle finger was there”. He estimates there were a total of five or six drivers. The fire brigade must secure the accident site during the clean-up work – if only for their own protection.
The firefighters tried to explain the situation unreasonably, but some drivers didn’t want to believe it, Strickner says: “The moment they were talking, they could have taken a different route.” Finally, a police officer intervened. The responsible department confirmed to the “Krone” that several drivers have received administrative reports.
“Don’t block the street just for fun”
Commander Strickner is annoyed by the aggressive road users: “That’s a bottomless cheek.” The firefighters wouldn’t block the road for “joke” – in their spare time, mind you. “If your colleagues say: ‘I’m not standing there anymore’, then you have to accept that,” he notes.
