Brazil’s right-wing populist head of state, Jair Bolsonaro, failed in his appeal against the results of the presidential elections at the end of October.
In addition to the dismissal of the election challenge, a fine of about 4.1 million euros was imposed on Bolsonaro’s coalition parties for bringing legal disputes “against good faith”. Like ex-president Donald Trump in the United States, Bolsonaro also expressed unproven doubts about the reliability of the voting machines before the election.
Bolsonaro supporters blockaded the streets to protest the results of the presidential election, with some calling for a military coup. The 67-year-old was narrowly defeated in October by left-wing politician Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. The former president (2003-2010) will start his third term on January 1, 2023.
