The extreme heat in Mexico has killed 48 people in two months. Nearly half of the deaths were registered in the past week alone, the Ministry of Health announced on Friday.
Since the start of the hot season in mid-March, a total of 956 people have been treated for heatstroke, dehydration and sunburn. Heat stroke was the most common cause of death.

Temperatures in the Latin American country are currently above 40 degrees in 27 of the 32 states. On Thursday, the northern city of Monclova in the state of Coahuila measured 46 degrees. In addition, many parts of the country received less rain than normal at this time of year.
Animals also suffer from the extreme heat. According to environmental groups, dozens of howler monkeys recently fell dead from trees in the southern states of Tabasco and Chiapas or required medical treatment due to dehydration.
