No arrest – after deadly race: suspect (26) released

Date:

The suspect (26) was released on Wednesday afternoon, who rammed into a 48-year-old motorist on the Vienna Ring on Sunday and fatally injured him. That is why he is no longer in custody. The second driver continues to be listed as a witness only. Initially, authorities assumed it was an overspeed race.

Justice now classifies the incident as a tragic accident. The 26-year-old denied from the start that it was a race – the man also doesn’t want to speed.

Red traffic light ignored
The accident happened around 7.45 pm on the Schottenring near the Vienna stock exchange. Two men, the 26-year-old and another, were on the Ring with their powerful cars, a Mercedes and a BMW. Police say the 26-year-old raced his vehicle through an intersection when the red light was on and collided with the 48-year-old woman’s car trying to cross the ring road.

Stuck in the car
The woman was trapped in her badly damaged car and after emergency medical treatment was taken to a hospital by the professional rescue service, where she succumbed to her serious injuries. The 26-year-old who suffered minor injuries in the accident was a Syrian with a Belgian driver’s license who does not live in Vienna.

A Tesla filmed the crash with its camera – the footage is currently part of the investigation.
