After a group of hikers found the decomposing carcass of a brown bear in Trentino, northern Italy, the cause of death is now a mystery. The bear has now been identified and, based on its ear tag, was determined to be an animal known as a “problem bear” with the identification “M62”. According to initial assumptions, he was mortally wounded by a fellow animal.
“M62” was considered dangerous because he had recently lost his fear of humans. The male bear belongs to the same litter as “M57”, who was caught in 2020 after attacking a carabinier in the municipality of Andalo, and “F43”, a female who was caught in September 2022 due to a wrong dose of anesthetic during capture to radio collar had died.
“M62” probably attacked by conspecifics
The bear’s carcass has already been recovered by the Trentino Forest Service and subjected to an initial investigation. Based on the wounds, “M62” is believed to have been attacked by another adult bear. Territorial fights between males are nothing unusual, especially during the mating season, but rarely end in death. The exact cause of death must now be determined, the authority said.
Protest against murder of “JJ4”
The bear issue is currently hotly debated, especially in Italy, after a female bear fatally injured a jogger three weeks ago. Last week the bear “JJ4” was captured, she is in an animal protection center in Casteller near Trento. Some 300 animal rights activists demonstrated in front of the center against the killing of the bear last Sunday.
Activists from an animal rights movement poured a red liquid into the Fountain of Neptune in the center of the northern Italian city of Trento on Monday. In a short time the water turned blood red. They protested the decision of Trentino Governor Maurizio Fugatti to kill three problem bears.
“We have the fountain in the color of the blood of the bears sentenced to death by President Fugatti. He alone is responsible for the disgrace that tarnishes one of the most beautiful regions of Italy,” said a statement from the animal welfare organization Cento per cento animalisti.
