After the latest pig manure scandal at a farm in the Klagenfurt-Land district, numerous activists demonstrated in front of the Carinthian Chamber of Agriculture on Thursday morning against “hidden animal cruelty” and “for an end to pig suffering on fully slatted floors”. However, according to the chamber, the demonstration stood. in the wrong place before the police intervened.
Some protesters, disguised as pigs, climbed the canopy of the Agriculture Chamber building with a ladder to “arm” them with megaphones to voice their views on livestock farming on fully slatted floors, while like-minded people in the forecourt of the room, equipped with posters and straw, did the same. According to these “Carinthians against animal cruelty”, the chamber is covering up animal cruelty, has long been aware of the recent abuses in the Klagenfurt-Land district, but has not taken any action.
“Demo in the wrong place!”
“We are definitely the wrong addressee for such actions. We cannot change the laws regarding full rosters, nor can we control the farmers,” parliament spokesman Wilfried Pesentheiner reacted to the demonstration in Klagenfurt.
Even if only the authorities can change laws and carry out checks, the black sheep among the farms must be denounced and abuses prevented, chamber office director Hans Mikl emphasizes: “But we are an interest group with an advisory function. If we encounter a problem, we respond immediately. But only the authorities can change the demanded full slatted floor ban. However, this should happen all over Europe, if not worldwide!”
Three arrests
After half an hour, police officers mingled with the demonstrators. At least three people were arrested and taken away.
In the late afternoon, the demonstration marches through the center of Klagenfurt.
