To become independent from gas, Vienna is now prioritizing investments. The city will once again have Austria’s largest solar power plant.
The expert committee for the energy supply security of Vienna, founded by mayor Michael Ludwig and city councilor Peter Hanke, has now presented concrete solutions. Key point: Planned projects for the rapid expansion of green electricity generation can be brought forward.
This should significantly improve local energy production for next winter and reduce Russian gas dependence on Putin. Hanke: “We are already preparing for the coming winter. With a gas storage of more than 92 percent and the use of fuel oil as a raw material in some heating installations, we can look forward to the cold months with confidence. However, preparing for the winter of 2023 remains a major challenge.”
Vienna wants to have the largest solar power plant again
It was decided to bring forward the expansion of the photovoltaic system on the former gravel dump in Schafflerhofstraße in Donaustadt. It should become the largest in Austria again. About 7,400 Viennese households should be supplied in this way after completion.
But the city itself also wants to save on operating costs. Like the federal government, Vienna has issued guidelines for employees in public buildings. This gives tips for the right heating, ventilation or lighting – both in the office and in your own four walls.
