Occupation continues – University of Innsbruck: climate activists make demands

Date:

The activists of “Erde Brennt Innsbruck” have been fighting for nine days at the University of Innsbruck to save the world from climate change. They pitched their tents in lecture room three on the Innrain campus. On Friday evening, the group handed over claim papers to the university’s management.

“As an open group, we decided on the demands in a democratic and consensus-oriented process. Now it is up to the decision-makers at the university to respond to this and to negotiate with us,” emphasizes Luca Moser. The submitted paper contains eight requirements. Concrete strategies must be negotiated for this.

The eight requirements

  • The comprehensive phase-out of fossil fuels
  • Appropriate behavior of the university in the face of the climate crisis and social injustices
  • Combating discriminatory structures at the university
  • Accessible access to university education
  • Promote democratic structures in the university
  • Freer design options of your own
studies and more direct contact with the university management
  • The implementation of the requirements of UniNETZ
  • Supporting the joint demands of the “Erde Brennt” groups in Vienna and Innsbruck

Duration of the occupation is still unclear
The implementation of the requirements also determines how long the lecture hall remains occupied. It remains to be seen how the university management will respond. In Vienna, the activists started hanging a banner on the main university building as early as October.
