Kyiv mayor predicts “partial” evacuation due to cold

Date:

In the worst case, the government is planning a temporary move to the suburbs where basic services are available

The rain of Russian missiles against Kiev continues, leaving practically the entire capital in darkness for the past week; without water, gas or electricity. To prevent further damage in the course of the war, the government is preparing all possible scenarios, including evacuation. Although this would not be complete, but “partial”. It would involve a “temporary relocation of certain groups of people to the suburbs, where basic services may be available,” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said in an interview with the RBK-Ukraine newspaper.

With these words, the alderman does not want to frighten the population, but ‘prepare for every scenario’. We should not rule out the worst case,” he says emphatically. The authorities want to have civilians “ready” in various situations, as “according to the military, the enemy intends to continue carrying out insidious attacks on the country’s infrastructure to intimidate Ukrainians with darkness and cold,” explains Klitschko.

For this reason, the government has appealed to the residents of the capital to collect water and food that can be prepared or consumed without electricity, warm clothes and charged power banks. “And in case of a bad scenario, it would be good if everyone could go to their house in the suburbs, where there is water and a stove, or to their friends’ house. But we are doing everything we can to prevent the worst-case scenario from happening,” says the mayor of Kiev, adding that “20% of the land is still occupied and the Russians will not leave, but I really hope and we are already do everything possible so that we celebrate the New Year in a peaceful Ukraine, free from the aggressor.”

As NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg denounced yesterday, Russia is using “winter as a weapon” to attack critical infrastructures and a sharp drop in temperatures is expected this week, which could reach as high as 20 degrees below zero. Therefore, Kiev has opened 430 heating points, where residents can get the necessary services, such as heating, water, internet and other forms of assistance. “And in an emergency, we deploy another hundred points,” says Klitschko, who estimates the existing generators for the operation of these areas at 500. In addition, there are twelve mobile modular boiler rooms.

Meanwhile, the shelling continues. Authorities today denounced Moscow’s air strikes on the Mykolaiv water supply station in Kherson. The region’s governor over the weekend already appealed to his citizens to supply themselves with water in the face of the threat of new offensives, which have not stopped since February 24, when Russia invaded the neighboring country. Since then, the Kremlin has launched 16,000 airstrikes, at least 12,300 of which targeted urban areas, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksei Reznikov denounced.
