The wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Olena Zelenska, called on people to think of their compatriots before Christmas. “We really hope that the approaching Christmas period will not make you forget our tragedy and that you will get used to our suffering,” Selenska told BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday.
“Ukrainians are very tired of this war, but we have no choice in this case. We fight for our lives. The British have a choice. They can get used to our tragedy and focus on their own important things in life,” Selenska said. But her message is: “This is not just a war for our freedom and our lives. This is a war of opposing worldviews, a war of values.”
Sexual violence as a “systematic and overt” weapon
Selenska attended a conference on sexual violence in armed conflict in London. She stressed that Russia uses sexual violence “systematically and openly” as another weapon. Russian soldiers would admit this openly in conversations with relatives. She claimed that the wives of the Russian soldiers encouraged her to do so. A global response is therefore necessary.
