This year, 109,000 migrants were registered in Serbia. They were taken to 15 reception centers, the head of the government’s commissioner for migrants and refugees, Nataša Stanisavljević, said on Tuesday. There are currently about 4,800 migrants in the centers, with “more than 1,000” outside. Rados Djurović of the Non-Governmental Center for Asylum Aid estimates the number to be much higher. There are about 2,500 on the Hungarian border alone.
The data suggests that the vast majority of registered migrants have left the country. There is also no information on the number of migrants who were not even registered on their way through Serbia. About 68,000 migrants were registered in Serbia last year, according to Stanisavljević.
Since the major migration crisis in 2015, a total of 1.5 million migrants have been registered in Serbia. According to Stanisavljevic, about 40 percent of migrants currently come from Afghanistan, followed by those from Syria, Morocco and Pakistan.
Some migrants can enter Serbia without a visa
Serbia is accused of encouraging illegal migration flows to the European Union through its visa policy. For example, Austria complained about a huge increase in asylum applications from Indians who had traveled to Serbia without a visa. Serbia has already lifted visa-free travel with Tunisia and Burundi. That should happen soon with two other countries, President Aleksandar Vucic said in mid-November, without naming these states.
