A 20-year-old bullfighter has been fatally injured by a bull during a competition near Montpellier in southern France. The accident happened in the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer arena during a competition to remove trophies from a bull’s forehead and horns, the National Federation for the so-called Carmague races reported Thursday.
The fighter, who still had trainee status, was seriously injured in a clinic in Marseille, where he died. Further matches were initially canceled and psychological help was organized for eyewitnesses to the accident that took place on Wednesday. The mayor of the city expressed her condolences to the relatives “after the terrible accident”.
The risky sport with the Carmargue bulls is part of the intangible cultural heritage of France. In contrast to the Spanish bullfight, which is also organized in the south of France, the animals are not killed afterwards, but returned to the pasture.
