Iran’s National Cyber Center has set a deadline for authorities and the media to fight alleged misinformation. Information services are required to correct reported disinformation within 60 minutes, according to a statement released by several Iranian media outlets on Thursday. In addition, the background of the news must be explained within 24 hours.
Iran’s cyber center is overseen by a council set up by spiritual leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to deal with issues related to “dangers of the Internet”. The organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) describes the Cyber Council as a censorship authority.
Regime blames social media and foreign countries
Since the outbreak of nationwide protests in Iran, the political elite have repeatedly blamed foreign countries and social media. Observers, on the other hand, see it as an attempt to divert attention from the real reasons for the protests.
The latest protests were triggered by the death of Iranian Kurd Jina Mahsa Amini in mid-September. The 22-year-old was arrested in mid-September for violating Islamic dress codes. At least 450 protesters have been killed so far.
